Andorra La Vella

The largest settlement in Andorra is the capitol of Andorra La Vella.

Casa de la Val is the name of the Duke's home, which began as a fortified manor home for the  Grand Empire Baron William de Busquet. The reclusive Duke keeps to the second floor, with the Chancellor Charcoal Ransol's offices on the first floor and the garrison on the third floor.

While the Duke has ruled Andorra for roughly three generations, the reclusive Duke is rarely seen, nor does he often involve himself with the day-to-day interests in ruling. 

The people of Andorra are grateful for his hands-off approach, as the older citizxens still rememberr and tell horrible stories of the  Grand Empire regime. "Aside from the Nights of Blood, the Duke has been the best of rulers - he leaves us to get on with our own business!"

There have been no incidents of the Duke indulging his lust for blood on the local populace. Many do not believe that the Duke is actually a vampire, but nobody chooses to ask inconvenient questions, as they don't really want answers.

Notable People and Shops

    • The Three Guardsmen - There are a number of guards, but these three have made quite a reputation for integrity, fierceness, and skill:
      • Nathadril the Blade - A Lios Alfar from Skandaharia.
      • Hrothgar the Geat - An Uruk from Oster Geatland (Denmark)
      • Falstaff the Large - A Half-Ogre from England.
  • Basran Embassy - Shihar Al Malik is a distant cousin of the Emir of Basra - the Emir has a large family), and represents his cousin on matters of trade. He has several guards, all Skandaharian mercenaries, commanded by Rorik. 
    • Alessandra Al Malik, Shihar's younger sister, also lives here. Demure and reclusive by day, at night she is the bold, un-Guided thief " Alyx. She operates under the sufferance of Gutierrez, who hopes to seduce her to his side.

  • Grand Empire Embassy - Gaspar Bernard is a scion of the Count of Foix, the nearest province of the Grand Empire, assisted by his Secretary Norris and four Templar guards. He has limited power, grudgingly granted by the Emperor.   
  • Ducal Square - This square has no market, but caters to the needs of the Ducal government and military, such as it is,
  • The Agricola - This square is host to a farmer's market and stalls every Wednesday. Prices higher here for the inconvenience and labor of setting up. Common booths and stalls include:
    • Fishmonger
    • Vegetable and Fruit Produce
    • Wines
    • Weaver
    • Cobbler
    • Tinker
    • Livestock
  • Alchemist - Balthasar is a respected merchant whose family has provided alchemical services for the people of Andorra La Vella for several generations. The current Balthasar is middle aged, but still healthy and vital, even if he does allow his son and heir (also named Balthasar) to spend too much of his time in the Alchemy lab.  Unknown to most people, Balthasar is the spymaster of the Duke, and often employs agents to "make deliveries for special customers" in Basra and the  Grand Empire.
  • Ransol family mansion - The Ransol family are an influential if poor family with political and military connections. The head of the family is Charcoal Ransol, who serves the Duke as his Chancellor, while Charcoal's brother Renard serves as the Commander of the Ducal military forces. Ther family are fierce rivals of the Aral family.
  • Aral family mansion - The Aral family are a wealthy merchant family, who own many of the business establishments in Andorra, from Sant Julia to Castlemount. They are ruled with an iron fist by the Aral matriarch, Venida Aral. Their family are fierce rivals of the Ransol family. Among their businesses are the Cheese Shop.

  • Church of Saint Stephen - The primary place of worship for those who follow the Holy Light.  Abbot Anselm is kind and gentle, until he feels that someone is taking advantage of his good nature; then he becomes stern and unforgiving. The church distributes alms to the poor of the city, and the staff will not say a word for or against the Duke.
  • Cheese Shop - This cheese shop is run by Jordi Bosc for the Aral family; the Bosc family has owned it for generations, but the Arals stepped in when the Bosc family fell upon hard times, and purchased a controlling interest. Often for sale: 
    • Manchego Sheep Cheese - A  hard white cheese - 6 CP/wheel
    • Tetilla Cow Cream Cheese - 2 SP/crock  
    • Cabrales Blue Cheese - Imported from Basra, it is made from a blend of cow, goat, and sheep's milk, then aged in natural limestone caves, developing a potent, spicy flavor - 4 SP/wheel
    • Garrotxa Goat Cheese - A distinctive grey mold rind, and a semi-firm texture. Has a nutty  flavor and often eaten with figs or a drizzle of honey - 6 CP, 11 CP with a jar of honey.
    • Zamorano Sheep Cheese - A hard cheese which is typically aged about 6 months. The cheeses are turned often and rubbed with olive oil, giving the cheese its characteristic dark color - 2 SP/wheel
    • Soft Andorra Goat Cheese - 7 CP/brick
    • Hard Andorra Goat Cheese - 5 CP/brick
  • Inn of the Black Raven - Located on the Ducal Square, this is perhaps the most expensive inn in Andorra Laundry and bath services are available at an extra charge.
  • Inn of the Laughing Ogre - Located at the Agricola, this in caters to a in inexpensive stay, Most of the guests sleep in the Common Room on the second floor. There are a few private rooms on the third floor.
    • Owner Rissard "The Boss" - Often in his office when not at a back table, playing chess.
    • Bartender Sasha Saint Cyr - Half-Fay refugee from the Grand Empire
    • Bard Russeau - Cynical womanizer
    • Innkeeper Kharet - A Gnome from Switzerland whose family are bankers. 
    • Waitress Annaleise - Sweet, cheerful, and adept at dodging wandering hands.

  •  Gutierrez - "The Fat Man"
    The Shady Ibex Inn - The Shady Ibex run by Gutierrez, a Basran in exile, called the Fat Man" by his minions. It is the home to the Andorra Thieves Guild, composed of smugglers, cutpurses, swindlers, burglars, and alleybashers. The Andorra Thieves Guild has a strict code against killing: "We are thieves, not assassins! Besides, it is bad for business. Corpses cannot make more money for us to steal!" Notable members include:
    • Mange - a strong, brutal thug with no mercy.

Ruins of Cragmoor Ruins of Cragmoor Once a reclusive monastery under the Grand Empire, this was built upon a ancient Roman crypt, into which the vampire Vaesna had been sealed. The monks broke the seal, releasing the vampire, who killed the monks, drinking them dry in a orgy of blood-hunger, and cursed the area with necromantic Darkness. The slaughter spawned numerous undead creatures, which still roam the area, particularly the graveyard. Decades passed, and the ruins have become home to Urgal the Bloody, a Hill Giant leader of a group of gnolls, goblins, and ogres. They occupy the surface level of the ruins, but do not dare enter the catacombs beneath.

Canillo

Canillo The village of Canillo is the religious center of Andorra, dominatrf by the Cathedral of Our Lady of Meritxell, patron saint of Andorra. Much of the local industry is focused on the support of the cathedral, with makers of incense, candles, tailors, and so forth.  The Cathedral itself id built in ther form of a lighthouse, casting Light into the Darkness to dispel evil spirits. The light burns around the clock, and burns expensive oil imported from Basra. The Abbess Calindra is constantly looking for ways to ethically make money, even as she relies on stipends of the Duke to keep the light burning, an irony which is not lost on her. Emirate of Basra

 Emirate of Basra The Emirate of Basra occupies the majority of Spain, and was at war with the  Grand Empire, who had chosen it to be it's next conquest. The Emirate benefits from the trade with the rest of the Mediterranean states, and export a variety of luxury goods including silk, silver, slaves, and agricultural products from their large slave-powered plantations included rice, wheat, bananas, watermelons, oranges, and figs. Ther Basran culture valued the arts and sciences, and the slave-powered labor allowed the middle- and upper-class to develop high degrees of craftsmanship as well as scholarly pursuits such has poetry, literature, and art. Natural sciences flourished, as did medicine. Most of the military was formed by the warriors of client tribes, who fought in their own units.
